grip tips:
A boompole is used in concert with a microphone isolation mount like the Rycote suspension system and choice of shotgun mics like the AT815b
or AT4041.

As a boom operator, listen very carefully.  You need only drift a small degree away from an actor to lose the sound coming directly from his or her mouth and to pick up their voice echoing off surrounding surfaces.

When resting between takes, place the handle base of the boompole on your shoe or other clean surface to save the mic cable coming out that end.  Never rest the boompole on the microphone suspension end.

Extend the boompole only as far as needed to get the mic in place.  Shorter pole lengths reduce fatigue.

Many shots will require your holding the boompole with both arms extended upwards above your arms.  For tighter shots, consider placing the pole behind your head and across your shoulders with both hands resting on the pole.  This will reduce fatigue for long takes.

Consider what surfaces are on the other side of the image frame from your mic.  If the floor is a hard, echoing surface, try putting the mic under the frame.
